From September 5 to 7, 2025, the Dutch Chamber of Commerce (KvK) will implement a large-scale update in the Trade Register: they will update the so-called SBI codes. The Standard Business Classification that identifies a company’s activities. Among others, pension funds, collective labor agreement parties, and statistical agencies use these codes to identify sectors.
New business activities have emerged, such as platform companies and developments in the field of sustainability. Outdated activities are also disappearing. Therefore, the old SBI codes no longer fit. This change also ensures consistency with European classification systems. Next month, the KvK will carry out a significant update, replacing or adjusting existing SBI codes based on the latest business activity descriptions in the Trade Register.
Business owners may be assigned a new SBI code by the KvK. This may affect collective labor agreement applications, subsidies, and reports. Therefore, check with the Chamber of Commerce to ensure that your business activities are properly registered.
While having an incorrect SBI code is not a criminal offense, it can have negative consequences for your business. An inaccurate code may lead to issues when applying for grants, permits, financing, or insurance. Pension funds and government agencies also use this classification in their assessments. Furthermore, a mismatch between your company’s stated objectives and SBI code can create legal challenges, such as engaging in unauthorized business activities.
